Bethany Cunningham (23), says she knows it sounds like kind of harsh, but the only reason the Indigenous Voice referendum was unsuccessful is because immigrants and the generational working class Western Suburbs residents are more susceptible to misinformation campaigns because they are less educated.

The Newtown-based post-grad arts student says she really cannot fathom a population of four million people who could get it so wrong.

“They really fucked it for us” says Bethany, while not exactly specifying what she means by ‘us’.

“It’s because most of them are just inherently racist and easily misled”

However, twenty or so clicks south, deep in the Cook Electorate’s idyllic beach suburb of Cronulla, the rest of the Cunningham family have got the crownies on ice.

“Haha sucked in lefties” shouts her brother Toby, a fridge mechanic from the Shire, not exactly specifying who he means by ‘lefties’.

“We win… Again!” shouts her old man, Hogan, a local tiler turned property investor.

“These elites will never learn!” giggles her mum, Donna, a well-known local real estate agent.

“That’s what they get for trying to divide us” shouts pop, a retiree living off negatively geared property investments.

With her family eating fresh prawns out of a styrofoam box, and the Crownies and Yellow Tail flowing – Bethany has decided to give this family catch-up a miss and stay put in Sydney’s enlightment belt for the weekend.

Mainly because she’s too sad about this whole referendum that she didn’t bother discussing once with her family.

In fact, the only other person in Bethany’s extended family who didn’t vote No on the weekend was her cousin Darren from Wollongong – who now completely abstains from any form of democratic process because he thinks the pandemic was a scam and that the UN is surveilling him through the AEC.

When asked if she views her entire bloodline in the same light as she views the deplorable Western Suburbs residents who voted No over the weekend, Bethany says it’s different.

“My family voted no because they hated the division”

“That’s different to the people who were actually gullible enough to believe complete bullshit!”
