NSW premier Chris Minns has warned Mardi Gras revellers not to downplay the dangerous nature of asbestos, after traces of the mineral were discovered in mulch in numerous parks across Sydney, including Victoria Park, which was set to host the Mardi Gras Fair Day.

Stallholders and attendees were informed on social media today that the event would be cancelled due to the discovery of bonded asbestos, which have been found everywhere from parks, infrastructure project sites, various rail corridors to schools and even a hospital.

If consumed or inhaled in its non-friable form, asbestos can cause a numerous diseases and cancers, including a rare form of deadly cancer known as mesothelioma.

Though revellers have been disappointed by the news, it hasn’t stopped them from making light of the situation – by insisting on calling it ‘YASSSSbestos.”

Speaking at a press conference today, Minns has politely reminded partygoers that asbestos is ‘extremely dangerous’ no matter what name you give it.

“Please, do not under any circumstances, enter Victoria Park”, said Minns, “it’s…it’s um.”

“It’s, ‘giving’ dangerous.’

More to come.
