ANZAC Day is here and crowds are now gathering at pubs and RSLs around the country, as punters make their way to the bar after rising early for the annual Dawn Service to honour our fallen diggers.

Those who didn’t wake up in time are encouraged to make up for it by heading down to the local to shout some beers for the men and women in uniform.

Aside from the usual ‘gunfire breakfast’ of rum and milk, the lager and dark spirits are flowing as Australia commemorates the brave efforts of our nation’s military at the two-up circle.

The traditional game popularised by Australian soldiers during the First World War, two-up has continued to be a firm tradition in ANZAC Day events nationwide.

However, at the University of Western Queensland’s Betoota campus, it seems the memo may have been missed.

Students from right across our medium sized town have been encouraged to attend the inaugural EPIC ANZAC DAY KICK-ON @ THE UNIBAR, where they will be treated to some exciting drum’n’bass music and $20 seltzer jug specials.

Complete with with a popular food truck offering Turkish Sushi fusion, the ‘festivities’ look to go all night.

This perhaps tone deaf event promotion has drawn comment from the local Betoota RSL chapter president, Kay Sarn.

“I’m all for the students enjoying the freedom the our brave soldiers fought for all those years ago in Gallipolli”

“I’m not sure they needed to include the word ANZAC in fluro bubble writing on the posters, but I guess it is ANZAC DAY after all”

“The only real issue I would have is their slogan.

“‘Have A Dig 4 The Diggers’ seems to promote the idea that you can only express your national pride through getting completely obliterated on high-sugar alcohol and cannabis-infused gummies”

“It’s a big call, but this is worse than their ‘Get Blind For Fred Hollows Fundraiser'”
