Logging is set to begin in one of the planet’s last ancient, old-growth rainforests today and its representatives in Canberra today were busy deciding which type of Victorian should lead them for the next couple of years.

The Tarkine is a cool-temperate rainforest in Northwest Tasmania that’s been described by the Australian Heritage Council as “one of the world’s great archaeological regions”.

As the destruction of the Tarkine is currently underway, local Greens members on the ground in the Tarkine have urged their political representatives to move next week’s planned in-fighting session from Canberra to the Tarkine in order to shine a light on the issue.

Newly-elected leader Adam Bandt told The Advocate this afternoon that he was open to the idea but needed to butt heads with every other person in the party room over the issue before he could give us a definitive answer.

“It’s just the way things are done,” he said.

“We’re taking the fight to the Tarkine on a state-level as well don’t forget,”

“There’s every chance next week’s party room shouting match will take place in the Tarkine, I can’t make any promises now but watch this space.”

More to come.
