When it comes to advertising a room on Flatmates, there are a series of code words and phrases to look out for, and being able to read between the lines can make a stark difference between whether or not you enjoy your stay.

For example, though the words ‘clean’ and ‘tidy’, may appear to have a similar at first, can convey two very different messages when examined closely.

Given that nobody wants to live in squalor, the word ‘tidy’ usually suggests that your new roomies will try not to be pigs, but may leave the occasional dish in a sink.

Whereas if the word ‘clean’ pops up in the ad read multiple times, you’re likely dealing with someone who will send you a very passive aggressive message about leaving your boots in the living room.

Phrases like ‘social but also likes time to ourselves’ usually means ‘we might go for a beer once a month’, and ‘not a party house’, usually means they’ll get a bit icy if you have friends over.

And for the members of a share house on 388 Daroo road, their ad that mentions the ‘neighbour’s friendly cat who visits us every day and night’ allows prospective tenants know that even their landlord won’t allow them the simply joy of owning a pet, they secretly got one anyway.

More to come.
