Today Show production staff were unsure how to react today as the show’s Facebook comment section was suddenly filled with witty insights and well thought out commentary regarding one of their latest stories.
In what may end up becoming the social media news event of the year, the morning show’s comment section on a story regarding an ice addict who accidentally sold her crystal meth to an undercover police officer to afford to buy drugs had a lot of positive builds on the original story.
One commenter stated “I am glad our police force was there to get this woman the support she deserves. She will be in my thoughts.”
Many other comments echoed this sentiment with one Today Show ‘Top Fan’ stating “This is sad for this woman and her loved ones. The war on drugs has been a poor use of resources and she is just one of many people who need our help.”
A response to this comment read “While I disagree with your stance on drug use, I think we can agree we all have days like this. We need to look at what we can all do to be a part of the solution.”
“What in the fuck is going on?” asked Today Show social media manager Rosie Wiggington.
“Did all these people have a near-death experience? Why aren’t they mentioning how schools should bring back the cane? Why aren’t Muslims being vilified? What’s happening?”
One commenter even started a GoFundMe for the ice addict in the story which has currently raised over $15,000 dollars.
The comment section took on a whole new level of supportive as the drug addict featured in the story came forward with a message of thanks to her fellow commentators.
“Hi all, really appreciate the positive sentiment here. I am in treatment for my drug addiction and cannot thank the officers enough for helping me get the support I need. I appreciate the money raised but cannot accept it. Instead, I am donating it to early intervention initiatives for at-risk youths, a program that has done great work in my area. Thank you and God bless.”
