“I think he’s misunderstood a lot of the time,” he said.

“If you follow AFL, like you know what’s going on in the day to day, what Sam does is actually pretty on point and funny. People from New South Wales and Queensland just don’t get it.”

A Melbourne man who moved to our state’s far south-west corner early last year has defended the disgraced AFL personality, Sam Newman after footage resurfaced of him wearing blackface to “impersonate” Nicky Winmar, who was due to appear on the AFL Footy Show that night.

Miles Gable also threw water on suggestion that Eddie McGuire did anything wrong for defending Newman.

“I follow the Demons,” he laughed.

“So I should hate Eddie – and Sam! But yeah, look. I think a lot of Queenslanders like to jump up and down about how racist and intolerant the Victorian brand of football is. But it’s not. It’s just a joke. It’s just a little bit of blackface,”

“If it was a problem, the AFL would’ve dealt with it there and then. But it’s just a classic bit of banter between mates. If you were Victorian, you’d understand. But you’re not so I guess there’s no point in me trying to explain why Sam Newman isn’t a pigheaded, vile cunt like you say he is.”

More to come.
