When it comes to adhering to traditional gender roles, none are quite as subtle as the standards held by some boomer mums – especially if they only have one son.

Not overtly sexist in the way that most of us have come to terms with misogyny, the boy mum instead puts her son on a pedestal and creates an environment where other women in the household (usually the daughter) have to pick up the slack for him, or in local woman Tara Jacobson’s case, holding the daughter to a much higher standard of living.

This is due to the deeply ingrained values instilled by her mum’s parents, who were a product of their times, and the fact that Debra Jacobson has been raised to not question the status quo.

Though this is not something that happens in every household, it’s sadly still quite common as society slowly grows out of the traditionally held values that women are the caretakers and men are the providers – though in Tara’s brother’s case, he isn’t providing anything either.

It’s alleged that Tara had been aware of these double standards for some quite some time, but that it had escalated to the point of being ridiculous, with her mum even asking for her help to clean her brother’s room.

Enquiring if she was being serious, Tara’s incredulous expression was met with a small laugh from Deb, who quickly explained why her brother was not capable of picking his own fucking clothes off the floor.

“Oh he’s a silly boy, he doesn’t know how.”

“It’d mean a lot if you could help, my back has been hurting quite a bit lately.”

“It’ll take five minutes.”

Shaking her head as she stormed off, Tara ignores the horrible stab of guilt she always feels between grappling with being a nice daughter or sticking to her feminist values.

More to come.
