A commercial building that pretty much only exists because the local council signed off on it’s construction probably didn’t need to be officially opened by a special guest.
The Betoota Heights Bunnings Warehouse is one of fucking heaps of Bunnings around Australia, and operates the same way as every other store. Which is to sell items to the public that they could find elsewhere if they really tried.
It is not a hospital and it isn’t a library. In fact, it is the opposite of those two things. It’s probably directly responsible for a lot of injuries amongst Betoota residents, and it certainly isn’t a quiet air-conditioned space for at risk kids to hang out.
However, it is a building. Which apparently is a good enough reason for Betoota’s mayor Keith Carton to invite a famous person to town for few Lime-infused Millers Chilled, which a popular drink at the time.
According to the equally unnecessary plaque commemorating this grand opening, it seems former Brisbane Lions player Brendan Fevola was unlucky enough to be the famous guy that the mayor wanted to meet that day.
It is not known if this was a paid gig for Fev or if it was something the club made him do during his Fortitude Valley days. Either way, there’s a framed photo of him in the entrance.
It is not known what type of people would actually turn up to a grand opening like this one, but it is assumed that they would mostly be easy listening AM radio die-hards who wanted some free shit from the outdoor broadcast.
