Family Holiday disaster was narrowly avoided last week when the Murl family’s trusty VX Commodore wagon almost ran out of fuel on the recently-completed Betoota Bypass.

“Geez, it was a close call” recalled dad Adam “The engine started to struggle and I could tell it was about to die in the arse. Then I remembered a trick my old man showed me; I just gave the fuel gauge a couple of good taps with my index finger and the needle moved up just enough to get us to the servo”.

Sure enough the time-honoured technique worked a treat and soon the family banger was slurping up the finest E10 money could buy at the new Betoota Bypass Service Centre and Mattress Superstore.

“I told him we didn’t have enough fuel to make it” said wife Melissa “We had to drive the last 50km with the windows up and the air-con off. Then to lighten the load we had to ditch the luggage and our least-favourite kid. But I guess we made it in the end so I’ll probably let him off with a light nagging. Maybe I’ll give him the single word answer treatment for 15-20 minutes; or less for good behaviour”.

The two remaining kids were unavailable for comment as they were trying to decide between a Calippo, Bubble-O-Bill or 5-Hour Energy Shot.
