Popular breakfast television programme Sunrise has been the victim of a targeted and angry protest this morning on the Gold Coast – to the point where the hosts had to address the situation.

A growing number of Aboriginal protesters swelled around the Sunrise set on Kurrawa Beach shortly before 8 am local time and disrupted the broadcast with loud shouting and placards.

David ‘El Kochie’ Koch and Samantha Armytage, hosts of the show, were barely audible above the chants and general rabble of the protestors, forcing the pair to tackle the elephant in the room.

“We love that people are able to protest their views in Australia, it’s a pillar of our democracy,” said Koch.

“But the tone of the chanting is becoming increasingly hostile and some of the language is becoming offensive. We had a dress-up competition planned for families today, there are lots of white middle-class children here trying to enjoy their holidays and I don’t think the protestors are taking that into consideration,”

“And, umm, the original kerfuffle about this whole thing was about protecting children, not ahhhh, land rights, so uhhh take that, protestors. Anyway, coming up next, we have David Campbell and Peter Garrett on to discuss the live export controversy!”

The Advocate reached out to Channel 7 for comment but have yet to receive a reply.

More to come.
