“It’s going to be like 40 here next week,” she said.

“That’s so fucking hot.”

Not to be outdone, her Chicago-living best friend could only laugh.

“Tans, it’s like minus 40 here now. I’d kill to be home. Do you want to swap for a day?

Laughter.

Tania Crewshaw and Melody Pearson are two best friends, separated by circumstance.

And two continents and the world’s largest ocean.

But while the tyranny of distance might separate them like a heart’s own median strip, the fact one of them in possibly experiencing the first signs of heatstroke while the other is probably going to die of exposure on the way to work is bringing them closer.

“Do you know what a snow squall is?” asked Melody.

Only silence was offered.

“It’s not a bird, it’s one of those storms that kills homeless people and freezes boiling water when you throw it up in the air.”

Tania confirmed that snow squalls are ‘fucked’ and ‘crazy’.

And with that, the tyranny of time forced Tania to hang up, finish her John Player Special, and retreat back into the air-conditioned comfort of her city job.

More to come.
