A solemn mood has swept across the country today, after a senseless and violent attack on the much loved regional Victorian community leader, Helen Haines MP.
Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and ASIO are investigating. The Joint Terrorism Task Force has also been activated - as the nation prays for the 65-year-old, who is reported to be in a critical condition.
As the Independent Federal Member for Indi since 2019, Haines is generally acknowledged to be a prime example of one of the few Australian MPs who have entered politics with the sole motivation of helping her community.
She is widely recognised for ability to engage with fellow politicians from all ends of the political spectrum, and the legacy of her political career is evident in the visible upgrades to government services and public utilities in her own regional Victorian electorate.
However, despite her reputation for treating all of her fellow Australians with humanity and despite her efforts to not isolate people with culture wars or polarising politics - Helen Haines still became a target for a politically motivated attacker.
The independent MP remains in a critical condition after being airlifted from Wangaratta in northern Victoria to Melbourne’s Alfred hospital for major surgery last night.
Police confirmed that they have taken a 43-year-old Tarrawingee man into custody.
This is just one of many examples of the rising culture of confused political violence that has overwhelmed Australia in the years since the pandemic. From the tragic shootings at Wieambilla in Queensland, to the nationwide manhunt for Dezi Freeman after a similarly violent incident that resulted in the deaths of two police officers in Porepunkah last year.
Meanwhile, the senseless attack on Helen Haines is already being exploited online, as social media noise merchants and agents of political chaos relish in assigning the the attacker with a specific political ideology. However, a quick browse the attacker's digital footprint shows a deeply twisted individual with confused and inconsistent ideologies that appear to have been detached from both reality and civilised political discourse by the toxic algorithms, hate speech and extreme disinformation that are allowed to spread online with zero checks or balances.
