Across the nation, recent graduates of the course you do when you’ve got no idea what you want to do: media and communications, have started the hunt for the non-existent job they watched in countless romantic comedies growing up.

The job usually entails writing articles about life, fashion and love for a big print magazine in an office full of stylish young women and hilarious gay men. Ideally, there is also a more masculine magazine a couple floors down full of young Matthew McConaugheys to enemies to lovers with.

Recent graduate, Sarah Thompson, was shocked to see the lack of journalism jobs that appeared when filtering her Seek job search to Advertising, Arts and Media.

“There were basically only social media assistant jobs or rural news reporting jobs, like where are the vacancies for Marie Claire or at least Shameless Media?!”

“Like I don’t mind Devil Wears Pradaing it to the top, starting as an assistant or something, but god don’t make me create Tik Toks for a small business.”

Head of Media and Communications at Betoota University, Dr. Rachel Brown has found majority of her students are signing up thinking they’ll end up like Kate Hudson or Jennifer Garner.

“It’s rare to find someone that has true journalistic intentions with the degree, I’m finding more and more students wanting to be the next Carrie Bradshaw rather than the next Tracy Grimshaw” Dr. Brown told the Advocate.

“In a way I blame Bridget Jones Diary for making journalism seem like an easy career path. She made it seem like she got reporting straight to camera after 2 weeks of handing in resumes.”

While many graduates are still hopeful to find their dream rom com career, others are accepting that Substack may be their only platform to write about life, fashion and love.

Unhopeful graduate, Suzie Myers, has been posting on her Substack consistently for the past 4 months.

“I mean it’s nice to get my feelings down, I haven’t fallen in love yet with a Mark Ruffalo lookalike yet but I have had Shit You Should Care About comment on one of my articles so that’s a win.”
