National and international news outlets are today covering the shocking fire out of an Australian oil refinery.

That fire at the Geelong oil refinery broke out overnight, awaking the nation to photos of an inferno and plenty of noise about how we are all fucked.

Kneecapping the refinery, the fire leaves Australia with one functioning oil refinery in the middle of global fuel crisis caused by some egomaniac who a decent chunk of our politicians seem desperate to emulate.

The Geelong refinery outputs roughly 10% of our Australia's fuel supply, and nearly 50% of Victoria's.

The fire has been adequately summed up as being 'unfortunately timed' by the nation's Energy Minister Chris Bowen.

He has said that imports will have to pick up the slack, which will obviously slug up the price of fuel and everything fucking else.

Local energy expert and macroeconomics professor at South Betoota Polytechnic Ronald Harvey has confirmed that the timing is unfortunate.

"What do they say, if you don't laugh you cry?" sighed Harvey.

"I mean look at a time like this, it does make you think it might have been handy to have any of the 5 oil refineries that were shut down under successive coalition governments."

"Or have our fuel reserves stored in Australia, instead of paying the yanks to look after it and not give it to us when push comes to shove - a policy that was brought in by Energy Minister Angus Taylor."

"But hey, those decisions were made with no forward planning based on the economic interests of the people who control our energy."

"So Angus and Matt can bang on about drill baby drill as much as they want, but the refineries they closed will take years to get back up online, when the rest of the world has stopped make combustion engines and we are once again left high and dry."

"But I don't think that's political expedient for them right now."
