One Nation are about to learn the lessons that both Queensland Premier David Crisafulli and Peter Dutton have previously learnt when it comes to needlessly wading into the reproductive healthcare debate.
While Pauline Hanson and her ragtag party of political firebrands are enjoying the sudden popularity that has followed the destruction of the Liberal Party, it seems that the One Nation are not that well versed on Greek mythology.
The ancient Greek myth of Icarus is a cautionary tale about the dangers of getting cocky when things are going well - and the consequences of ignoring the lessons learnt by others. It tells the tragic story of a young man who flew too close to the sun on wings made of wax and feathers, before plummeting to his death when the wax melted.
It seems all too predictable that it was too good to be true for Australia's boom right-wing minor party.
On the same week that One Nation made history by outpolling every single major party nationally, Deputy Leader Barnaby Joyce could not help himself from flying a little closer to the sun by deciding to publicly unveil his party's lesser known 'Anti-Abortion' policy.
And as the immediate backlash from all corners of the Australian public have indicated, One Nation are suddenly losing feathers and will begin their plummet.
This comes after Queensland Premier David Crisafulli skirted very close to losing the unlosable election against a tired Labor Government in 2024, after Bob Katter demanded the support of both Queensland major on anti-abortion legislation.
The then-Labor Premier Steven Miles had zero to lose by saying fuck no, wheras David Crisafulli was unable to give an answer - due to the very real evangelical Christian elements the LNP's backbench.
This made for a very long and scary election night, as Crisafulli sacrificed dozens of seats that would have otherwise gone his way. And that's someone who neither said yes or no.
Following this hairy 2024 Queensland election, Liberal leader Peter Dutton read the riot act to his federal colleagues that the issue was a no-go zone and cost the party significant support where they most need it to win, particularly among women in metropolitan seats.
However, it seems Barnaby and Pauline lack even the slight self-awareness and political intuition harboured by Peter Dutton, in their blind efforts to import American politics to Australia.
Political experts have acknowledged that Barnaby Joyce's appearance at last night's anti-Abortion rally in Sydney marks the high water mark for One Nation, as bookies adjust their odds accordingly.
Barnaby Joyce will soon again be lying on his back in the streets of Braddon, only this time he will have fallen from 32 points nationally.
