A Queenslander had some long standing suspicions confirmed after watching last night’s Origin game from an inner city Sydney pub.
Mikey Dayaz (26) has, like many fellow Queenslanders, always held the conviction New South Welshmen just don’t get origin.
Which is why when Mary Fowler appeared on the big screen for all but a few seconds and got a response larger than any of the tries had warranted, he was dumbfounded.
Fowler, who plays for the Matildas, has been dating NSW’s star player Nathan Cleary since late 2023.
Considering she spends most of the year playing for Man City in the UK, the pair rarely see each other, so it was quite the shock for NRL fans when she appeared donning a Blues jersey and cheering on Cleary.
"OMG there she is. I told you guys she wouldn't miss out on watching her mans!! FINALLY like why did they not show her earlier!!" cried Clare Myers (22), who had been attending the decider with the sole reason of glimpsing Mary.
From the adjacent table, Mikey bristled.
“Actually, she's from Cairns. My cousin’s mates sister went to school with her.”
“So much for mates before dates.” he whispered, doing little to conceal his teary eyes.
“Truly I like the Matildas as much as the next guy. They’re great. But this is footy not soccer. Can’t we just focus on one thing at a time.”
“Like to be fair I cheered a little bit when I saw her too. But come on. These New South Welshmen went about 100000 times more wild for Fowler than they did any of the tries, or conversions for that matter.”
“They just don’t get origin. They’re all out here for show.” he huffed.
“Excuse me.” Mikey, a non-smoker, then headed to the smokers area and chain smoked three in a row.
