Local 26 year old man, Lachy Stephens was hiding his face in his jacket last Friday after taking his very white parents to a Vietnamese restaurant for some pho.
Fiona and Doug Stephens were excited to try the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup but unfortunately were used to very western phonetics that made them completely butcher the word.
Lachy was absolutely sure he told them prior to entering the restaurant the correct pronunciation.
“I literally said to them in the car, it’s like you’re saying fuh, or fun without the n. We even did a practice, I have no idea how they managed to fuck it up so bad” Lachy explained to the Advocate.
When the waiter came over to take the Stephen’s orders, Fiona Stephens confidently came in to order the entrees; spring rolls and chicken skewers, very safe english words, that had little risk of fuck up. Unfortunately, it was the main that messed everything up.
“She comes in and goes, could I please have the beef pho but it was the most ocha pronunciation like saying foe or toe with an f. Then Dad comes in, doubles down and says it the exact way,” Lachy embarrassingly told our reporter.
“It was like everyone looked at us as they butchered it, the restaurant went quiet. I wanted to die in a hole.”
Fiona and Doug were completely unaware that there was a mispronounication.
“It was a delicious foe, I’ll definitely be coming back for more. I might even try a “ban my” next time, that looks so yummy!” Fiona excitedly told the Advocate.
