A local university student has this weekend been nominated for a community award, after a big couple of years of civil service.
Tom Higinski has been put forward for the Order of Australia, after a groundswell to recognise his efforts at a French Quarter pub gained serious momentum.
One of the mainstays behind the bar at the Royal Civic Commercial on Merde Qui Coule, Higinski's consistent and concerted efforts to pass the cost of bubbled water onto his pub group bosses, has won him the nod.
"I don't think he's ever charged me for a soda water," explained one semi-regular who spoke to us under the condition of anonymity.
"Even just a straight up standalone one."
That experience is reportedly a very familiar one, with Higinksi doing his best provide bubble hydration and enjoyment at no cost to community members where he can.
"Yeah, I don't see myself as a hero, just a man trying to do his bit," said Higinksi today.
"What difference does a few grams of carbon here and there matter to this pub group."
"They seem to be happy to give it away to anyone in the pokies, so I think it's fair to keep that spirit for the broader community."
"Particularly when they don't get any change from 10 bucks for a schooner of generic beer."
