A local Betoota woman packed her vintage fluro striped Sportsgirl duffle bag for the 15th year in a row for a girls weekend down south.
The 28 year old nurse, Kayla Lu bought the popular bag back in 2011 when the store’s main demographic were high school girls who appreciated out there prints rather than Sopha Dopha wannabes. Kayla purchased the bag for a whopping $49.99 and hasn’t looked back ever since.
“I mainly got it cause all the girls in my year had it and would use it as their gym bag, like it was embarrassing to not have one” Kayla explained to the Advocate.
“Some of the older girls had the Country Road duffle but for my age it was Sportsgirl all the way.”
“After graduating school I kept going back to it, it was the perfect size, had the crossbody strap, I just couldn’t let it go” she added.
Kayla was invited to a friend’s hen’s in Betoota’s southern wine region where she decided to bring the bag. While some friends turned their nose up at the “vintage” bag, others were impressed she still had it in one piece.
Kayla’s friend, 30 year old Ruby, hadn’t seen such a bag since her One Direction days.
“I had one too but it was a black background with different fluro paint splotches on it” Ruby told our reporter.
“And of course with the iconic rainbow strap” she added.
Kayla admittedly tried using other weekend bags over the years from fancier more adult stores but couldn’t get the original duffle out of her mind.
“There was a year there where one of the straps broke off and I actually learnt how to sew just so I could fix it.”
“I’m pretty devoted.”
