Word Of The Week: Diaphanous (Something Thin, Light, And Delicate Enough To Be See-Through)

On another fine Friday afternoon, The Betoota Advocate is pleased to present its third social media edition of the Word of The Week.

Famous with readers of the hard copy newspaper here in the Diamantina Shire, the Word of The Week is a segment we run at the end of the week celebrating the glory of language and literacy.

With schools and daycares around the country celebrating Book Week over the last few days, we thought it was fitting to be extra bookish with our choice.

So we are going with Daiphanous - which is the amalgamation of some old Greek - phaínein (meaning "to bring to light, cause to appear") combined with the prefix dia- (meaning "through").

Before any of the sticklers out there take umbrage with the photo used, diaphanous doesn't have to mean completely translucent.

It is often used to describe very fine material that allows enough light through to be transparent.

Hence the choice of a lovely schooner of beer for the choice of image.

Keen eyes might notice it is alongside 98% finished pint of Guiness, which is NOT diaphanous - in what our photo editor thought was a nice example of light and shade.

So take forth the word Diaphanous and use it as you see fit.
