Sydney’s Vivid Still Has Nothing On Perth’s Giant Puppet from 2015

Sydney’s 3 week annual festival, Vivid, which features interactive light sculptures, installations, large scale laser shows, free music concerts, talks with international guests, pop up food experiences and chef demonstrations still has nothing on that one time a giant puppet walked through Perth’s CBD in 2015. 

The 3 day event which featured a 6 metre tall “little girl” puppet and her 11 metre tall uncle, a deep Sea Diver, drew nearly 1.4 million people to Perth city to witness the event.

Perth local, Jan Murphy recently visited Sydney’s Vivid and struggled to see what all the fuss was about. 

“The lights were cool I guess but Jesus Christ there were so many bloody people, it’s like none of these people have seen an actual WA sunset. It shits on these lasers” Jan told our reporter. 

“They need to get down to Cott beach with some fish and chips and a bottle of rose at 6pm one night in summer, now that’s what you call a light show.” 

When our reporter asked Jan what she believes is a great community event, she immediately brought up the puppets. 

“Me and my family arrived at 4:30am on the last day with a little marquee, a portable camping stove top for a bit of breaky, just to get a good view of the puppets.” 

“They were just ginormous, it was spectacular!” 

“It was a celebration of the Anzac centenary, what’s Vivid a celebration of? Viral Tik Tok food trucks?” 

Other West Australian local, Graham Lurman still remembers the days the puppets walked down Hay Street. 

“It was an incredible few days, I cried when the two puppets reunited at the end. What a performance!” Graham said with a big grin. 

When asked if he would ever attend Sydney’s Vivid, his response said it all. 

“Vivid?”
