A Balmain man is rummaging through his luggage cupboard this morning as he prepares for an emergency trip up to Queensland.

With less than 48 hours notice, it’s understood father of three Garry Jack-Roach has decided he simply must head up to Brisbane this weekend to attend the funeral of a distant Queensland Uncle who none of his family have ever heard about before.

Speaking to his wife whilst dusting off the cobwebs from an old gym bag, Garry has told his dearly beloved that it will mean a lot to the rest of his extended-extended family if he turned up.

“Sorry love, I just think it’s super important that I go,” said Garry, as he threw an old suit, some Hawaiian shirts and his favourite Tigers jersey into his bag.

“Uncle Darren was a legend, I only met him once when I was about 8 years old, but that one Easter we spent with each other has stayed with me for years…”

It’s fortuitous timing for dear Garry, who has quietly admitted to The Advocate that the timing of the funeral couldn’t be better, as it will give him the chance to head to two days of Magic Round.

And given that convincing his wife that spending three days sinking piss in BrisVegas with other mates from his punters club was always going to be a challenge, the passing of 87 year old Darren Berrigan has kind of worked in his favour.

“Yeah the funeral is Friday morning, so I should make it to the Sharkies vs Doggies game before kick off.”

“And the flights back Saturday morning were so excruciating, I thought I better stay for the Tigers and Eagles, and the rest of the Saturday.”

“Throw me that 1999 Meriton Apartments jersey, Uncle Daz wouldn’t mind me wearing it under my suit jacket.”

More to come.
