Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has weighed into the disturbing allegations surrounding the Sydney Swans AFL team.
However, rather than voicing how deeply troubled he is by the allegations, sending his thoughts to victims, making a plea for the game to ensure appropriate measures are taken and urging men across all areas of society to do better and hold other men to account and leaving it at that - the PM decided to throw a weird cross code jab in there.
Speaking to ABC's 730 last night he said;
"It's extraordinary that this has occurred," Mr Albanese said.
"The idea that this is occurring is completely untenable, and the initial response as well was, I think, completely unacceptable.
"The NRL have a no-fault standdown clause for issues like this, but the first thoughts should have been always about women and their safety.
"I don't think that occurred at this time. The AFL certainly needs to do better."
Those comments have raised eyebrows with the PMs rather confusing reference to the NRL as an example on how to deal with scandals like this.
The confusion stems from the rather prolific number of alleged and convicted - sexual assaults, domestic violence incidents, drug supply and abuse scandals that have emanated from the NRL over the years.
"Yeah, probably shouldn't be pointing to the NRL as a beacon of how to deal with these things," mused one general sports fan from the Betoota Industrial Park cafe this morning.
"And I don't think it's extraordinary that this has occurred, given the culture in all footy codes - and previous examples of this kind of stuff happening in NRL for example."
"I think we can all agree with the other stuff he said, but holding the NRL up as a shining light of how we can be better was not very well thought out."
"Particularly given he's just destroyed any chance of gambling reform because his mate is the boss of the NRL."
"And it's pretty public how much of an advocate for the NRL he is."
"Maybe it means he'll condemn the NRL next time a pretty fucked thing happens..."
More to come.
