The next two weeks will offer a diagnosis to the state of Australian Federal politics, as the Farrer By-Election looks set to seperate the grain from the chaff on May 9th.
Will the far-right minor party known as One Nation finally realise their potential by winning a lower house seat outside of Queensland?
This has been a burning question for political commentators ever since the resignation of Sussan Ley, who stood down from a 25-year-career as the local MP for the regional NSW electorate of Farrer - after she was knifed by her own party and replaced as leader not even 12 months into the job.
Since then, both the Liberals and the National Parties have worked tirelessly to plagiarise One Nation's populist policies regarding the slashing of immigration and Net Zero commitments.
Of course, this hasn't helped them win over soft One Nation voters at all, because why would you vote for the B or C list version of One Nation, when you could vote for a REAL One Nation Candidate like (failed Labor candidate) David Farley.
Farley’s main challenger for the seat is the community-backed independent Michelle Milthorpe, who put the fear of God into Sussan Ley in the 2025 election by dragging her lead down to just 6.2%
In her very few mentions in the Australian media, Milthorpe has been described as a 'Climate 200-backed candidate' - despite that only 2 per cent of donations made to her campaign came from the Teal funding vehicle, with all the rest coming from regional communities who are growing rather concerned that they are being forced to choose between climate change denying mining shills and full blown white supremacists at the ballot box.
The Nationals, who once held this seat safely under Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer, are nowhere near winning this seat - with the TAB paying $52.00 for the Nats candidate.
The Liberals, who held this seat just as safely for 23 years under Sussan Ley, are also not likely to win after Angus Taylor basically gave up by preferencing One Nation ahead of anyone else. The TAB has the Libs paying $21.00 - and in true Liberal Party fashion, it seems that the jilted Sussan Ley is not responding to their requests for help on the campaign trail.
With the Coalition out of the picture, the voters must decided if they want the local teacher who campaigns tirelessly against child abuse, poor regional health outcomes and disastrous water policy - or if they want to vote for party lead by the professional politician from Ipswich who has turned the social and political temperature so far up that we now have groups of white supremacists booing the Aboriginal war veterans at ANZAC Day Dawn Services?
