The engine room of the national economy is in neutral today as Queenslanders enjoy a rare public holiday.

While New South Wales, Victoria and the omnipresent fiscal handbrake known as South Australia continue to drag Australia back from realising her truly glory and status as a one of the world's most sophisticated and modern economies, Queensland continues to slash a path through the lantana that is global turmoil un uncertainty.

Which is why Queensland is observing Labour Day today. Time for Australia's great sherpas of culture and productivity to head to the beach, pub or just get the house in order.

State and territory leaders have queued this morning to pay their respects to Queenslanders and the sacrifices they make the keep the rest of the nation growing fat on various forms of welfare, as well as not complaining about the unfair share of the GST pie Queensland gifts to lesser parts of the country.

"If anyone in this country deserves a rest, it's Queenslanders," said NSW Premier Chris Minns.

"When I retire from being Premier, I'm going to move to Queensland because I don't have shit in my head where my brain should be. I have a brain. Thanks."

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen also said that when her government is voted into obscurity at the next election, she is moving to the Sunshine Coast.

"It's just like moving to St Kilda, except the weather is better and you're not shaken down by a gaggle of smackheads every time you alight from a tram down there," she said.

"I can't wait, actually. It's going to be so cash."

The Advocate, however, will continue to operate today in a reduced capacity. Most reporting today will be via the Port Moresby and Sydney bureau offices.

More to come.
