A young Sydney couple are reportedly considering making the worst decision of their lives after watching an extremely well-trained Border Collie calmly play fetch at their local park.

The couple, who have never owned a working dog, said they were immediately impressed by how responsive the animal was to its owner.

“Look how smart it is,” said the girlfriend, as the dog dropped a ball directly at its owner’s feet and waited patiently for the next command.

“We could definitely have one of those."

The pair reportedly spent the next ten minutes watching the Border Collie sit, stay, heel, run back instantly from 50 metres away and ignore three other dogs running past it.

At no point did they appear to consider the several thousand hours of training that may have created this behaviour.

Instead, the couple began discussing whether a Border Collie would be suitable for their two bedroom inner city apartment and current lifestyle, which includes both working full time and occasionally going for a walk on Sunday.

“They seem really chill hey,” said the boyfriend.

“And obviously they’re smart, so I feel like they’d probably train themselves a bit.”

The dog’s owner later explained that the Border Collie receives around two hours of exercise each day, regular obedience training and several forms of mental stimulation.

The couple reportedly nodded along before asking what breeder they got it from.

By the time they left the park, they were already scrolling through Border Collie puppies for sale.

Their friends and family have since strongly advised against it.
