A value-seeking gentleman from Brisbane was delighted to spot Senator Murray Watt sleeping upright in economy class yesterday evening on the XPT overnight service to Sydney after being such a vocal critic of government spending in the past.
Somewhere between Macksville and Kempsey, South Brisbanite Kerrod Fraser was on his way to vape in the toilet when he spotted the Minister for Environment and Water fast asleep with crumbs down his front, his wallet and phone on the tray table and his glasses on the floor. His laptop was on the seat beside him.
As a seasoned traveller of the night XPT, Kerrod said he is often amused when novices take the night train as they often have too much trust in society and have their guard down when it very much should be up.
"I was heading to the shitters when I saw Senator Murray Watt fast asleep, upright in economy. On the night XPT. And for the first time in a long time, I had some faith in government. I wouldn't say it'd been restored, just a bit less annoyed at the waste,"
"But I am human, so I put his phone and wallet away in his laptop bag, then chucked the bag on top of the laptop. That middle part of the journey is when things get interesting. I've seen lesser blokes get their chins punched off over a smoke on this fucken train,"
"But yeah, good on him. Spose he could've got a flight, business class even. But it's good that he's getting the train with us real people."
However, Senator Watt's office confirmed this morning that Murray didn't arrive in Sydney feeling refreshed and ready to attend meetings.
"The Senator had his RM Williams boots pulled off his feet while he was asleep," his media advisor told The Advocate.
"Someone tried to get into his phone and have now bricked it for 7 days. His credit card was stolen out of his wallet and used to buy chips and cans of coke from the buffet car before it alighted at Wauchope and was used at a service station to buy tobacco,"
"He's speaking to Police as we speak."
More to come.
