Local RSL Announces That Anyone With A Sydney Marathon Medal Can March On Anzac Day

The Betoota Heights RSL has ruffled some feathers in the community today, with an interesting new announcement.

The Heights Sub-Branch has angered a number of members by revealing that anyone with a Sydney Marathon medal will be able to march next year.

That move is set to be aimed at helping to modernise their base.

"We believe we'll be able to tap into the growing community of people who want to display their service in public," said a spokesperson for the Heights RSL.

"Plus, the grit, determination and resilience that it takes to complete a marathon is worth recognising I think."

"And if you aren't aware what it takes to complete a marathon and get a participation medal, just ask someone who's got one."

Arthur Jones (78), one of the members of the club spoke to The Advocate this morning from the RSL cafe, and was rather unimpressed.

"Yeah look, I think it really cheapens things a bit mate," said Artie.

"Don't get me wrong, running 42.5 kilometres is a hell of an impressive effort, but I don't really think that gets you a start on Anzac Day."

"In fact it doesn't."

"Just wear your medal around town, and into the office on your first day back if you absolutely must."

"But yeah, getting to march is pretty crook."

The RSL sub branch have yet to respond to the strong public sentiment this morning.
