Letterboxd Website Crashes As Melbourne International Film Festival Kicks Off

The Melbourne International Film Festival has kicked off this week. 

MIFF has been running since the 50’s and offers movie goers the chance to catch some exclusive international premieres as well as some good old home grown Australian cinema. 

In a city crawling with cinephiles, Christmas has come early.

However, it’s not all popcorn and choctops.

Cyber security expert Clive Peters, has issued a grave warning for the popular movie reviewing website Letterboxd. 

Speaking with The Advocate Mr Peters voiced his concerns. 

“Letterboxd is at serious risk of a major website crash”

“We’ve observed heavy internet traffic during the Cannes and Berlin film festivals respectively and I think MIFF could be the one to tip the scales”

“MIFF goers have strong opinions on film and Letterboxd is their megaphone,” he said. 

Running across 18 days, MIFF screens films at a mix of metropolitan and regional venues so folks from Carlton to Castlemaine can catch a flick. 

In a city where cultural capital is as valuable as actual capital, MIFF is a big deal.

Mr Peters said he and his team would be monitoring Letterboxd closely during the month of August. 

“Cities like Berlin, Toronto and Melbourne are home to a high volume of film nerds”

“They know what mise en scène is and they’re not afraid to talk about it in a public online forum”

“Agnes Verda is their guiding star”

“Their love for independent cinema and avant garde film might just crash Letterboxd though,” he laughed.
