"It's almost as if you're there!" he said while gazing into the painted-on views of sandy Greek beaches on the poorly lit restaurant wall.

After spending the last three months watching friends post daily Instagram stories from Mykonos, Santorini, Crete and several other Greek islands he hadn't previously heard of, the 29 year old says he'd accepted that another European summer had passed him by.

That was until he walked through the doors of his local taverna on Friday night and was immediately transported to the Aegean sea."Look at that" he said, pointing towards a slightly faded mural of a whitewashed village overlooking impossibly blue water.

"Could almost be in Santorini."

The immersive Mediterranean experience was reportedly enhanced by blue-and-white tablecloths, fake grape vines hanging from the ceiling and a framed photograph of the Acropolis that appeared to have been printed sometime around 1997.

By the time a large plate of grilled octopus arrived alongside a Mythos beer, witnesses say any lingering jealousy had completely disappeared.

"Everyone's spending six grand flying over there," he said.

"I'm basically getting the same thing 10 minutes from home."

The illusion was briefly interrupted when a bus could be heard braking loudly outside, though the man quickly reimmersed himself into the vibe with the sound of Greek pop off a UE Boom in the corner.
