Remy Matthews' arrival to school this morning has left all the other kids in Ms Pearson's 4/5 composite class wondering why they even bother.
Year and year again, Remy and his younger sister Winter have managed to knock book week out of the park.
However, as the offspring of Year 2 teacher Mrs Matthews, the siblings' peers say it’s just not fair.
“Having a teacher as a Mum is a clear advantage,” said year 5 student Harlow.
“I had Mrs Matthews in year 2, and she is an absolute pro at arts and crafts. So it really doesn’t leave us with an even playing field when every year, Remy and Winter rock up in awesome DIY costumes that none of us can possibly compete with, even if your Mum’s got it from Spotlight.”
“One year, Remy came as the Gruffalo. He had a fully handmade fursuit, and fake teeth made out of piping stuff from Bunnings. That year I was Harry Potter, but Mum just got me glasses from the cheap shop and drew a scar on with her lipstick. It was honestly embarrassing for all of us normal kids.”
Amid the backlash, Remy and Winter say the key is staying impartial.
“Mum just does it, we can’t exactly say no,” said Winter.
“And besides, there are prizes by year level during assembly, so we each get a massive block of chocolate and sometimes a footy or something to take home. It’s awesome. It’s almost as good as the end of year when all the parents give Mum a box of celebrations to say thanks and there’s a never ending feast in the fridge.”
“Anyway, if you’ll excuse me, I think they’re calling out winners in a sec.”
Winter then went and rejoined her class, sitting cross legged on the pavement.
More to come.
