Emily Stapleton (29) couldn’t help but admire New South Wales’ display of tenacity last night during State of Origin II.

Though she really wanted to catch up on Love Island, she decided some quality time with boyfriend Jack Matthews would be a nice mid-week reset.

Plus, he had already claimed dibs on the TV. So at about 7:30, Emily headed to the front room and settled onto the lounge to watch some ‘good footy’ as he'd been referring to it.

Both New South Welshmen, Emily couldn’t really care less about the outcome of the game. For Jack however, Origin is a seriously emotionally vested event that dictates his mood for weeks at a time.

“Tbh I wanted to go for QLD because well have you seen them lol but I thought Jack might get cut so," said Emily.

Though New South Wales started strong, Queensland dug deep and were at a 18-44 advantage as fulltime neared.

With a few minutes to go, NSW player Mitch Barnett scored a very late try beneath the posts.

These kinds of tries are typically called consolation tries, and don’t really do much besides save a bit of face for the losing team.

Smug Queenslanders will often use them to say ‘oh well, you did your best’ to their Blues supporting mates.

“Awwww yay. Go NSW,” said Emily beside a very glum Jack as the score crept up to 24-44.

“Babe they scored.”

“It’s actually so cute how they just keep on going even though there’s no possible way to score 20 points in five minutes. Honestly I would so just give up. But aw. That’s really sweet to see.”
