Magic happened overnight in Durban with a toilet in the South African team's change room magically exploding just minutes after Matt Renshaw took his first Test wicket.
It was Proteas captain Temba Bavuma who fell victim to a trap set by the big Queenslander and Pat Cummins, who unfortunately got a bit of bat on a stock off-spinner from Renshaw that popped up into the hands of Nic 'Welcome to First Grade' Mattinson up close under the helmet.
Not since fellow-part-timer Ricky Ponting famously claiming the wicket of Michael Vaughan on the opening day of the 4th Test at Trent Bridge in 2005 has the Australian men's side seen such a cruel blow dealt by the cricketing Gods. In this context, Renshaw's wicket seems much more critical.
As Bavuma made his way back to the pavillion, his match now over, a rare but reliable phenomenon occured.
"We can confirm a toilet exploded in the South African dressing room yesterday," said an ICC match offical.
"Which is unfortunate but understandable. We don't condone the destruction of porcelain with top-shelf English willow but we know it happens and when it happens, we nod pensively and we move on."
More to come.
