Outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron has today resorted to a desperate measure.

The leader of the nation currently rocked by ongoing protests has finally decided to apologise to the people of France - for banning smoking on public transport.

This comes after his government finally got to the bottom of all the hoohaa in the land of the free spirits and the bold thinkers - and learnt that the major cause of the protests was the ban on smoking on public transport.

There had been much speculation previously in the media about the cause of the riots, with many under the impression the French Rugby League team's appalling performances at the World Cup had been to blame.

Others had cited the squalid state of the French education system and general societal inequality, with President Macron even promising to implement a number of changes across the nation's schools and universities.

However, while those changes may still prove popular, it's since been confirmed by a leadership group amongst the protestors that the ban on smoking in public transport and buildings is actually the cause of the consternation.

According to a spokesperson for the broader civil unrest, the 2007 decision to ban the lung lollies on the pleb sleds has festered for some time, with the nation of protestors finally deciding to make their anger known after a student was kicked off a bus for having a dart.

That then led to the widespread protests the world has witnessed, with the government forced to come to the party.

Macron has yet to respond to the latest development officially, but is reportedly open to overturning the ban if it gives him a headache free few months.

More to come.
