Brisbane Transplant Knows A Good Spot In “Core-Poor-Roo”

A Brisbane transplant has completely blown his cover after referring to the inner city suburb of Coorparoo as ‘Core-poor-roo’. 

Though anyone born within a 200 kilometre radius of Brisbane city is well aware the ‘r’ in the suburb’s name is silent, it can still often throw off visitors and those who have relocated to the area. 

Tom Graham (31) settled in pretty quickly after moving to Brisbane for work and ‘better weather’ sometime last year. Admittedly, however, the suburb names were still managing to trip him up a bit. 

After arriving at the office this morning, Tom’s coworker Luke asked how his weekend had been. 

“Yeah good dude, heaps of fun actually. Have you been to core-poor-roo bro? That place is so underrated aye. There’s a couple pretty good breweries out that way. You should for sure go check it out sometime,” Tom said. 

“Ohh Coorparoo? Yeah it’s alright I guess, haven’t spent too much time out that way,” Luke answered, hoping Tom had taken note of his pronunciation. 

“Yeah man, so good,” Tom replied. 

Some time later, in an exclusive interview with The Advocate, Luke admitted Tom’s mispronunciations had recently begun feeling like an ethical dilemma. 

“Do I straight up let him know? He still calls Toowong ‘Two-wong’. The other day I heard him fully pronounce every syllable and letter in the word Indooroopilly. He calls the Sando the Sandstone Point Hotel, too,” he said. 

“Like he’s a nice guy. He means well. But there comes a point. I just don’t know if I should gently give him a bit of a heads up, you know.”

It’s reported that today already, Luke has heard Tom tell four more colleagues the same story in an unchanged manner.
