Two Kiwi men based in America have found themselves caught in between a geo-political and cultural sporting flashpoint in Los Angeles this afternoon.
Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, a New Zealand musical duo currently based in New York, had no idea their innocent trip to the West Coast to watch their home nation's football team would end with them caught in a shouting match between pro-monarchist Persian-Americans and a the travelling Iranian football fans.
The Kiwi men, who have also admitted to never previously watching their rugby-obsessed nation play the alien sport of soccer, didn't think they would find themselves in the centre of the politically charged match.
"We thought maybe they were just supporting different soccer teams" said Bret.
"But then we remembered they were playing us so that couldn't have been it"
"And they weren't yelling about New Zealand" added Jemaine.
"No, one of them was from Iran and one was from America" Bret corrected.
"Yeah but they were both speaking the same language" Jemaine rebutted
"Yeah good point"
The pair spent have much of the last few hours trying to determine which side of the argument they were accidentally standing with before concluding they were probably standing with neither, although they couldn't be completely sure.
"Someone asked if I supported the Shah" Bret explained.
"What did you say?" asked Jemaine.
"I said I support New Zealand."
"What did he say?"
"He looked disappointed."
Jermaine admitted he briefly considered pretending to be Australian to avoid further questions before remembering that would probably create a completely different argument.
More to come.
