The national mood been given a much needed boost this morning with the news that the most famous global soccer competition has just kicked off.

This story comes as Mexico and South Africa played an unreal game of soccer overnight, in the opening fixture of the FIFO international soccer tournament.

Taking place over the next 39 days across Mexico, Canada and the America from the movies, the big soccer cup thing is expected to bring the entire world together as we unite behind a universal love for soccer, and the fact England will probably not take it home, again.

Speaking to a number of casual Aussie sports fans, it’s understood many are just excited to rev up their mates who actually play, follow or understand soccer, by constantly calling it “soccer”.

“Nah I don’t mind a bit of Soccer! I played a season for Betoota United when I was 10 years old and Mum wouldn’t let me play contact sports yet,” Harry Cahill (32) told The Advocate.

“Plus I’ve got one Croatian mate whose eyebrows twitch off his forehead every time we call it soccer instead of “Football”, and that never gets old.”

Of course, given Aussies will proudly get behind anyone in a green and gold jersey, it’s expected the entire country will be cheering on the SOCCER-oos as we attempt to skittle our opponents in Group D who include Paraguay, Türkiye and Amurica.

And with many of our soccer games taking place in times that are quite polite for our national psyche, Aussies everywhere are ready to start pretending they understand what a 3-4-2-1 formation is.

“Yeah I’ll watch a bit of it, why not?”

“Also imagine how good it will feel to go from after work Friday drinks, into a big night to munching a kebab at 5am while watching Australia stick it to the Americans in Seattle.”

“That’s gonna be one of the all time great Saturday mornings.”

More soccer to come.
