White Lotus creator Mike White has today revealed that the ‘asian girl monologue’ in last weeks’ episode was actually inspired by Australian comedian Chris Lilley, who played an asian woman in ‘Angry Boys.’
In an candid interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mike White revealed that he accidentally watched the TV show after trying to download a bootleg copy of the 1958 movie, ‘12 Angry Men.’
Watching it on a flight from LA to Bangkok while partially inebriated on a mix of red wine and weed brownie, White says he was immediately enamored by Lilley’s ability to effortlessly inhabit the mind of a foreign woman – which is where the idea of the monologue began to form.
“I really believed that I was watching a Japanese woman named Jen Okazaki, and not a white Australian man”, said White.
White says he’d also watched both seasons of ‘Summer Heights High.’
“There’s a reason why there’s so many Australians in the show this season”, says White, who has made secret of his love for injecting weird Australian characters into the show, “in fact, Sydney Sweeney’s character in season one was partially inspired by Ja’mie King.”
When asked if he plans on getting Lilley on board for future seasons, White remains tightlipped, but does hint a season four could potentially be filmed in Australia.
“I might have my eye on a certain popular coastal town, but we’ll see.”
