‘Two Dollar Shop’, located on the busiest strip in Betoota has been serving Diamantina’s bargains for decades.
The bargain outlet which pretty much does what it says on tin the tin, offers mostly $2 items.
Bizarrely, the store seems to be operating in some sort of netherverse where inflation is just a nebulous term that has no actual bearing on the price goods sold.
Speaking with The Advocate, economist Hugh Dickson described the impossibility of the situation.
“Look we’re stumped,” he said.
“You can’t open a store that with a title that directly ties into the value of your stock”
“A cup of coffee cost about 45c when this store opened in the 70’s just to give you some context”
“Petrol was 9c a litre,” he explained.
Mr Dickson appeared visually distressed whilst explaining.
“I guess what I’m saying is, I’m really not sure how this store is getting away with selling notepads, pens, padlocks and fish tank accessories at the same price for almost 60 years”
“Granted the quality of the stock has stayed exactly the same but that could be said for many Australian products that have increased in value astronomically over the years”
“Usually I could use a swathe of fancy jargon to wiggle out of an economics question about inflation but this joint appears to be completely immune to the normal laws of economics,” he said.
