For the first time since taking leadership of the Liberal Party, Peter Dutton has gone several days without criticising the government or the public service
In fact, there has been complete radio silence from the leader of the Opposition, ever since has was caught out fleeing from his North Brisbane electorate the night before a Cyclone was due to make landfall.
On the same day that Peter Dutton told multiple talkback radio stations that the Prime Minister should be focused on governing instead of campaigning, he himself had flown to the sunny eastern suburbs of Sydney to meet with billionaires donors on a campaign fundraising junket.
After being spotted in Sydney airport, media outlets were very interested in whether or not Peter Dutton had done the one thing a Liberal Party leader should make sure they never do again.
Did Dutton pull a Scomo?
Did the Leader of the Opposition flee from his local electorate, hours before a tropical cyclone was due to make landfall, to go somewhere that he deemed more important?
His office flat out lied and said he did not. But it has since been confirmed he did.
It’s not yet known which of his 30 investment properties he has been hiding out in, but the Australian media has experienced a refreshing lack of negative comments about the state of this country in his absence.
Meanwhile, South-East Queensland and Northern NSW remains of high alert for flash flooding as ex-Cyclone Alfred makes it’s way inland as a Tropical low.
In less than 24 hours, of the annual mean rainfall in Brisbane has been measured at 1,050mm. The city may not have experienced the eye of a category 2 cyclone down Queen street, but the recovery process of this weather event will be very exhausting and very expensive.
While both Prime Minister Albanese and the QLD Premier David Crisafulli appear to have gone a full week without sleep, and the well prepared residents of Brisbane emerge from their homes to begin a clean up effort that could last months, Peter Dutton has gone completely quiet.
Experts say this is because showing his face in public might result in the Leader Of The Opposition being heckled by his own voters, who now know for a fact that he’s far more interested in the concerns of billionaire property developers than his own local constituents that have elected him with ever-shrinking margins for the last twenty years.
