A deep vein of Australian nostalgia was struck over night, as the nation celebrated 25 years since the Sydney Olympics at a televised gala hosted at the very same venue that held the games.

The event doubled as the inaugral induction ceremony for Stadium Australia’s hall of fame.

While it was a pleasant and heart-warming night-of-nights, several images has also struck horror into the hearts of now grown up Australian kids who remember this major cultural moment as one of their most formative childhood memories.

Ten sporting heroes, both Olympic and non-Olympics, have been inducted as the stadium’s first cohort of hall-of-famers.

They were selected by a panel of journalists, broadcasters and administrators – who will add to the initial list with 10 more inductees every three years moving forward.

The greatest living Australian Olympians, Paralympians and footy legends joined former child superstar singer Nikki Webster reprised her opening ceremony performance.

While the heavily moisturised sportsmen turned media personalities, Thorpey and Joey Johns, are still looking almost exactly the same as they did at the turn of the millennium – former Socceroo superstar John Aloisi has since rebranded into a silverfox elder statesman of Australian football. The nation’s pride and joy, Cathy Freeman has also upgraded to aunty-status in the decades since her glorious gold medal in the 400m sprint.

But it was Nikki Webster’s transformation into a fully grown up young mother that has left Australians of all ages in a state of shock.

Webster reprised her performance of Under Southern Skies with her daughter and son – both of whom are similar ages to what their mother was when she instantly became a household name in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Local ageing millennial, Kylie Amarossi (34, Betoota Heights) has been rocked by these photos.

“What the fuck” she says.

As someone who was 4 years younger than Nikki Webster was during the Sydney Olympics, Kylie somehow always remembers her being younger than she was.

And now, with a new generation of performers on stage with their mum, Kylie is fully aware that she may also be a grown up too.

“She’s older than my mum was during the Olympics … And my mum is a proper boomer.”

“Wait… Does this mean Strawberry Kisses came out a quarter of a century ago?” she says, as she examines her own hair.
