A local Betoota friend group were seen with puzzling facial expressions as their Australian born friend started speaking in a slight Scouse accent last week.
24 year old Harriet Higgins was catching up with friends over the weekend when the thick Liverpool accent began showing up on certain words.
Harriet’s male friend, Joshua Beacon, says he noticed the change when she greeted him with “hiya love!”
“It was only slightly odd at first but once she asked to pull me for a chat, I knew exactly what the meaning behind the accent was,” he told the Advocate.
“I checked the date and saw it was June, that could only mean one thing: Love Island season.”
Women speaking in a British accent during the months of June and July is quite a common occurrence due to the excessive amount of Love Island episodes released per week.
Australian Dialect coach, Joanna Hardwig, who was responsible for Russell’s Northern accent in Robin Hood, believes over exposure can lead to accents happening subconsciously.
“These women are watching hour length episodes, 7 days a week, for 8 weeks, it’s not surprising they’re picking up on the nuances of the British accent,” Joanna explained.
“First thing they’ll replace their t’s with glottal stops, next thing they’re asking how many eggs you have in their basket.”
Another victim of the Love Island effect is 28 year old Yvette Gordon, who has started speaking with her hands as if she has a full set of acrylics on.
Yvette’s boyfriend, Henry, has noticed the change in his girlfriend ever since the return of the dating reality show.
“She carries her drink bottle around everywhere and has started calling me a mug, I don’t even know what that means,” Henry cried to our reporter.
“She told me to go sleep on the daybed outside, we live in an apartment, we don’t have an outside!”
With many family and friends concerned about their female loved ones who are currently under the Love Island spell, experts want to assure them that there’s not long left, only 54 episodes this season.
