On Monday, British adventurer Karl Bushby returned from his 50,000-kilometre (31,000-mile) walk around the world that he first set off for in 1998.
Bushby first set off in Chile at age 29 with the goal to walk back to his place in Hull, England.
Though he initially expected it’d take him about 12 years, it ended up taking him much longer due to COVID-19, wars, visa restrictions, and all the other economic catastrophes the world has been subjected to in the last three decades.
Karl also left behind an 8 year son who is now 36 to tend to his journey.
Now that he’s back, however, and aged 57, there’s still only a few things about his journey he’d willingly change.
“Look, not that anyone is going to set off on this same journey. I’d actually be pretty bloody pissed if they did because it would take all the attention off me,” he said.
“But in theory. Like not in real life. Just hypothetically. If you were to do it, I reckon you could knock it over in a decade or less if you just had 6 pints at Spoons right before you took off.”
“That was the majority of my training, to be fair, just getting absolutely blitzed and then trying to run home, catching a train to a town really far away and knocking back a few then seeing if I could get home without using the trains.”
“But yeah 6 pints will do it. If you want to be really woohoo how you going, you could also order a pitcher of blue lagoon.”
“I kind of wish I’d done that because I’ve actually accidentally missed my son’s entire life which is kinda fucked up ha ha, 6 pints probably would’ve avoided that.”
“Oh well!”
More to come.
