The federal opposition has launched a counter-campaign to the Albanese government's $20 million fuel conservation effort, featuring veteran lamb spokesman Sam Kekovich delivering a direct message to Australians who think precious diesel is theirs to waste.
The 60-second spot, produced by the Menzies Research Centre at an undisclosed cost, opens on Kekovich filling up a 70-series Landcruiser with roof racks at a servo, informing viewers that anyone caught driving for pleasure or using turbo timers would be found.
"You un-Australian, diesel-wasting, soft-handed excuse for a motorist," Kekovich tells the camera, pausing to take a long sip from a can of full-power Coca-Cola.
"Leave it for your country cousins, for the firefighters, ambo and coppers. Our truckies and trains. We catch you cutting up a fire trail for fun, it's two behind the ear on the spot for you, son."
Kekovich then demonstrates a gang-land style execution that wouldn't seem out of place in the next season of Mr Inbetween, even taking the time to gesture the bubbler like flow of blood from the back of his own head.
Opposition leader Angus Taylor said the ad represented a more direct approach than the government's effort, which he described as "twenty million dollars of paternalistic wank."
"Sam gets it," said Taylor.
"Australians respond to pragmatism and a bit of panache, not this blue-haired Marrickville condescension. That suburb used to be full of decent people, now it's just fat yuppies on sharebikes that never visit their parents back at their family home in Pymble."
The ad concludes with Kekovich standing on top of Uluru, pointing directly at the viewer and reading out a list of prominent Australians who've been caught wasting diesel and calling for a mob to go over to their house to rip them apart like angry dogs.
The government did not respond to the ad directly, though a spokesperson noted that Level 3 of the National Fuel Security Plan does not currently include provisions for Sam Kekovich.
