A North Shore man who, with a little help from his dad, bought a terrace home in the once working class suburb of Redfern, has found himself scrambling for his phone after a bloke at the pub told him that his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs had just signed a guy called Hakeem Haas.
Atticus Larper (30), who moved to the Inner City a few years ago from his Neutral Bay home, was quick to embrace his new local footy team, despite his lack of experience with the game.
"I didn't even know Rugby League was a sport to be quite honest, I grew up mainly around Rugby Union, but when I found out about this version of rugby I was definitely drawn to the Souths" explained Atticus.
Like many aspects of his life, Atticus has gone to extreme lengths to portray himself as a working class inner city native.
"The Rabbitohs really have that under dog spirit, which I can relate to"
"At school I was forced to miss out on an excursion to Stonehenge in the UK due to a few missed training days with the schools rowing team, so I can definitely relate to the resilience of a club like the Rabbitohs"
Despite regularly wearing a vintage red and green cap and even sporting a traditional-flash tattoo of a rabbit on his arm, Atticus has yet to see his team live in the flesh.
"Yeah I'm always so busy during footy season!" he said before kicking the air in frustration.
While news of Hakeem Hass's arrival to the Souths has energised Rabbitohs supporters throughout the city, Atticus was forced to research who this mysterious man from the Broncos was before he risked getting caught up in any more footy talk.
