As the winter months roll around, Australians may notice a slump in their morale and heightened feelings of misery and doom.
Be it in their workplaces, households, bedrooms - or indeed within themselves.
With freezing winds, gloomy mornings, darker afternoons and weeks of icy rain, this country is never prepared for the annual transition from the golden sunshine of an Aussie summer.
If the last few weeks have sent you into a negative rut, it's worth remembering that it isn't just you. It's a clinical condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD).
SAD is characterised by depressive episodes that most commonly occur in the back end of autumn and the start of winner, triggering lethargy and sadness that is often hard for the individual to recognise.
But the good news is, there's ways to tackle it!
Combatting the perils of SAD requires a proactive and multi-faceted approach. Experts say that some of the most effective day-to-day tips involve exposure to morning light (if you can), regular physical activity, a concrete routine - and seeking professional help when feeling overwhelmed.
One lesser known but arguably efficacious approach to overcoming SAD is going to a shitty karaoke bar with a group of Filipinos.
"This particular approach should definitely not be dismissed" says Dr Enrique Dela Cruz from the Medical Association For South-East Youth in Australia (MASAYA).
"Having at least a couple of Filos in your social circle always helps with mental wellbeing, but to spend six hours with them in a dive bar or karaoke booth is a proven way to overcome seasonal depression"
"An evening of hardcore singalongs to world famous RNB ballads can only help lift ones spirits in the gloomy months"
However, Dr Dela Cruz says that this unique approach to self-care also comes with certain challenges.
"Regardless of how you feel about Michael Jackson or Chris Brown, you will find yourself in a position where you will have to sing both Billie Jean and With You"
"You may personally draw the line at Remix To Ignition, but beware that others will not"
