Authorities have confirmed that an elderly Chinese man calmly rock fishing during hazardous swell conditions is displaying a level of balance and coordination that could rival a professional athlete.
The man, believed to be in his early seventies, was seen standing on a narrow ledge as waves crashed over the surrounding rocks, holding a long fishing rod in one hand while shielding a lighter from the wind with the other.
Witnesses say he did not once look down at his footing.
“I could barely stand upright on the path on my run” said onlooker Matt Keegan sheltering from the wind.
“He was down there in leather shoes, lighting a cigarette like he was waiting for a bus."
The Bureau of Meteorology had earlier issued warnings about large swells and unpredictable sets, advice that hadn't reached the fishing enthusiast.
A nearby group of younger anglers wearing life vests and water shoes were seen packing up their gear as another surge rolled through.
The man remained in position, cigarette now lit, rod tucked under his arm with minimal adjustment.
“He’s got a plastic bag, a folding stool and no visible concern for his personal safety” Matt added.
Surf Life Saving representatives say they regularly encounter similar scenes and describe them as deeply stressful to watch from a distance.
The fisherman briefly glanced at the horizon, reeled in his line with one hand and tapped ash into the water without breaking stance.
