A Sydney man who once spent his entire childhood begging his parents for ride tickets and show bags has found himself inexplicably drawn to the agricultural hall and woodchopping arena.

“I used to think this stuff was for old people” said Daniel Reeves (31), now standing transfixed by a man methodically turning a log into perfectly round point moments before it broke in half.

“Now I’m here 20 minutes early to get a good spot.”

Daniel, who as a child would sprint past livestock displays in search of fairy floss and nausea inducing rides, now speaks passionately about the technique and discipline required in competitive woodchopping and sheep shearing.

“There’s real stakes here” he explained.

"People train for this all year you know.."

The shift has extended to other traditionally overlooked attractions, including really large pumpkins.

"Woah look how big that pumpkin is! That's amazing!" he said with childlike excitement.

“I don’t even remember these existing when I was younger” Daniel admitted.

“Or maybe I just didn’t have the patience to appreciate a really solid pumpkin.”

Friends report that Daniel now actively avoids the rides section altogether, citing long lines, vertigo, and what he calls “extortionate show bags"

“I walked past a kid begging for a $40 bag of lollies” he said.

“Meanwhile he's ignoring a perfectly groomed alpaca behind him.”
