Two men separated by fifty years have found common ground at a local pub after discovering they both drink Resch’s and have strong objections to paying 13 dollars for a schooner.
Retired mechanic Barry Collins (70), struck up a conversation with local skate rat Will Harris(21), after noticing the young bloke had ordered the same beer.
“Good to see someone your age drinking proper piss,” Barry said, shifting his newspaper to make room at the bar.
Will, accepted the compliment without providing further context as to why he was ordering the beer.
The pair’s friendship developed when a Gen X dad walked into the venue and asked what hazy IPAs were on rotation.
Barry looked at Will. Will looked at Barry.
“Here we go,” said Barry.
The newcomer then requested a taste of something described on the blackboard as tropical, prompting the two men to take mouthfuls of their beers.
“It’s beer, mate. Doesn’t need to taste like a fruit salad,” Barry muttered, earning a nod from Will.
Within minutes, the pair had established that beer used to be cheaper, pubs were closing too early and the new beers tasted like shit.
Will says he enjoyed speaking to someone who understood the value of a straightforward Australian lager.
Barry says the conversation restored his faith in the next generation.
